How To Heal Your
Broken Heart
a book by Dr. Kirk Laman

Remarkably, new medical research has proven that your negative emotions can be as damaging to your health as high cholesterol levels.

It is accepted by physicians that anger, hostility, and overwhelming grief can actually cause sudden cardiac death?

A patient of mine, by the name of Helen is a good example of how psychological issues can create heart illness.  When Helen first came to see me she questioned the idea that her emotions were causing a heart problem.

“I can’t believe fear and anxiety are causing my heart to beat erratically,” she said to me when I first saw her in the office.

She was a realtor who suffered from Atrial Fibrillation a chaotic heart rhythm disturbance that was making her life unmanageable.  Helen was challenged by life’s daily activities- walking, bicycling, and even climbing the stairs to do laundry.

Medications relieved her irregular heartbeat, but whenever Helen felt fearful her racing heart would cripple her.  Tests confirmed that Helen’s heart was functioning normally.  No real physical cause could be found for her Atrial Fibrillation. Her fear and anxiety were truly causing her heart troubles.

Amazingly, after she learned a simple technique for heart opening called- Practicing Remembrance, (outlined in my book-How to Heal Your Broken Heart) her anxiety disappeared and so did her irregular heart rhythm.  Even her fear evaporated.   Now she enjoys life’s simple pleasures- early morning walks with her dog, and even the challenge of mountain biking.

Helen’s heart has been healed- not just physically, but also emotionally and psychologically.

Hi, I’m Dr. Kirk Laman, a board certified cardiologist.

In the last 40 years routine heart care has produced amazing achievements.  Heart transplantation, angioplasty with stents, cardiac defibrillators, and many other life saving treatments have forever altered the landscape of what is considered good heart treatment.

But for all out technological success, we sometimes overlook the healing power of such simple things as a caring smile or a warm touch.

What is clear to me is that in order to create the best possible heart health we must treat more than just our bodies.  We can’t ignore our emotional, mental, and psychological problems if we want to become truly well.

Alleviating fear, combating anxiety and depression and relieving sadness are critically important if we want to prevent illness and promote optimal heart health.

It is my heartfelt desire that people who suffer with illness of the heart, whether it be- physical, emotional, or psychological find lasting relief.
